1997

Study on German Development Cooperation in Rwanda

Commissioned by GTZ, Prof. Kum' a Ndumbe III elaborates a study on "Conflict Prevention through Urgent Measures and International Cooperation in Rwanda".

Conflict Prevention in Rwanda

From May to July, an AfricAvenir team headed by Prof. Kum' a Ndumbe III (with Stefan Jansen and Aline Beta) is sent to Rwanda in order to recommend ways in which conflict prevention mechanisms could be integrated into future GTZ development projects. The study was commissioned by the GTZ itself. Inspired by the African palavers held on different topics in Cameroon, the AfricAvenir team develops an integrative and holistic approach including workshops, seminars, popular theater, dance and African palavers.

African Palavers on Democracy, Ethnicity and Elections

From January to March, 18 African palavers take place on "Democracy, Ethnicity and Elections" in Douala, Boadibo, Dibombari, Bossedi, Buea, Limbe, Tiko, Dizangue, Edea and Pouma. During three months the rural population which is often left out of the political discourse expressed on topics like "Multi-Ethnicity - An Obstacle for Democracy?", "Democracy - A Disruptive Element to Ethnic Coexistence?" and "Implications of Ethnicity on Democratic Elections in Cameroon".

Cooperation with Akademie Graz

In March, a cooperation agreement is signed between AfricAvenir and the Akademie Graz in Austria.

Democratisation and Decentralisation

In March, a seminar on "Democratisation and Decentralisation" takes place in Yaoundé.

Civil Training of the Population

In February, a seminar on the "Civil Training of the Population in a Democratic System" takes place in Douala.

Democratisation Process - Challenges and Perspectives

The first seminar on democratisation is officially opened by the German ambassador, but later over-shadowed by police threats to forbid and abort the conference.

Seminars and African Palavers on Democratisation

Through an agreement between AfricAvenir and the German Heinrich Böll Foundation, three seminars and 18 African palavers are organised on "Democratisation, Decentralisation and Ethnicity in a Democratic System" in Douala, Yaoundé and in different villages.

Martin Hageman, Volker Carmens and Sarah Hiron from different German Universities arrive in Douala in November and stay until March 1996.

Re-inforcement of Printing Unit

In December, the printing unit is re-inforced by 6 other different machines.

AfricAvenir's internship program continues with Marco Cartensen of the University of Flensburg, the second European internee to be working with AfricAvenir.

Evaluation Trip

AfricAvenir organises the evaluation trip to Cameroon by Mr. Blumenstil, a high-ranking German official of the Ministry of Economics in charge of the international cooperation program of the Land of Hessen.

Evaluation of Development Cooperation

A study elaborated by the founder of AfricAvenir, Prof. Kum' a Ndumbe III in cooperation with a member of the Institut für Afrikakunde in Hamburg is commissioned by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS). It is meant to evaluate the KAS project "Political Education in West Africa" implemented in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Togo and Ghana.

Structural Plan

In September, a structural plan of AfricAvenir's activities is set up.


Scholarship Agreement with Will und Partner

The enterprise Will und Partner in Munich starts granting yearly scholarships to AfricAvenir employees and Ph.D. students for specialised trainings in various fields.

Internship Agreement

In July, an agreement is signed between AfricAvenir and the ASA Program of the Karl Duisberg Gesellschaft, Berlin/Germany on internship and exchange of students and young workers.

In May, the German edition of AfricAvenir's Newsletter was first published and distributed.

Introduction to Cameroon

In February, a seminar entitled "Introduction to Cameroon, the State and the People" is organised by 15 students of the University of Flensburg/Germany and AfricAvenir

In January, a close collaboration is started with Kommune Niederkaufungen.
